MKTA provides mātauranga Māori consultation services. This usually involves an invitation from a prospective client to offer advice and ideas on matters relating to mātauranga Māori and its application. We have received invitations to provide advice in a wide range of fields of activities – from education to research, science and technology to arts and culture.
Engaging our Services
We are happy to receive invitations to provide advice when and where appropriate. This can be initiated by contacting Parekāwhia McLean at the following addresses:
Initial half hour consultation, free of charge
Once contact is made, an initial consultation of half an hour can be arranged. The purpose of this meeting is to clarify the general intentions and needs of a prospective client. We charge no fee for this initial half hour meeting.
Previous Clients
In the past three years, it has been our privilege to work with a number of clients. They include:
- Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, 2003-2005 – development of a major policy framework concerning the use of mātauranga Māori in research, science and technology, entitled ‘Vision Mātauranga: Unlocking the Innovation Potential of Māori knowledge, resources and people’
- Ministry for Economic Development 2003 and 2005 – attendance as part of the New Zealand delegation at a meeting of the World Intellectual Property Organisation Standing Committee on Traditional Knowledge, Genetic Resources and Folklore 2003, conducting a seminar on mātauranga Māori and its economic potential, 2005
- Ministry of Culture and Heritage, 2003-2005 – preparation of entries on aspects of mātauranga Māori for Te Ara-New Zealand Online Encyclopaedia.
- Te Papa National Services, 2004 – preparation of a report entitled ‘Museum Practice and Mātauranga Māori: A Discussion’
- Ministry of Education, 2005 – project involved preparation of a report entitled ‘The Purpose of Education: Perspectives Arising from Mātauranga Māori’
- Te Puni Kōkiri, 2005/06 – preparation of a report entitled ‘Traditional Knowledge: Some Comment’
In addition to these clients, we have also provided advice to the education sector (a number of tertiary education providers) and to a range of non-profit entities.
