MKTA is 'incubating' the development of Ōrotokare: Art, Story, Motion Trust, a trust dedicated to indigenous theatre and performing arts. The goal of the trust is to rediscover, explore and renew indigenous performing art forms - particularly those of the traditional whare tapere - by researching those forms, evolving them and giving expression to them in newly created performances. Ōrotokare achieves this either by performing them on their own or through encounter with performing arts and expressions from other traditions.

Towards a new indigenous theatre
Ōrotokare acts as a forum for a new creativity, inspiration and vision with respect to indigenous theatre and performing arts. We experiment with each of the individual forms and we also explore the notion of a new indigenous theatre that might emerge when these forms are brought together into a new and coherent whole.
