Much iwi history and tradition can be discovered through studying placenames and histories associated with sites and localities of significance to iwi. Between 1994 and 2000, Dr Charles Royal assisted the late Taimoana Tūroa in the completion an important iwi history told through placenames. Entitled '
Te Takoto o te whenua of Hauraki, Hauraki Landmarks', the book is a major text on the iwi history of the Hauraki region. It is an important example of the iwi histories which are focused upon place and the relationship between people and place. It follows in a similar vein to Don Stafford's '
Landmarks of Te Arawa' and F.L. Phillips's '
Nga Tohu o Tainui'.
