Iwi Histories and Traditions

Stories of the Tangata Whenua

Iwi communities have existed in New Zealand for at least six centuries. Their tangible and intangible heritage exists throughout our country and much work is ongoing regarding its place in the make up of modern New Zealand society and culture. MKTA has conducted research in a number of areas relating to iwi histories and traditions. These themes include:
  • iwi histories told through placenames
  • iwi traditions such as 'pūrākau' or myths
  • iwi histories and traditions told through traditional chanted songs

Each of these themes is rich in the history, life and culture of iwi communities. You can read more about each of these themes in the attached pages.
